2012 Reading List: We Need to talk About Kevin

We Need to talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

January 17 – January 22

( 4 stars)

First of all, it should be noted that I read this book by mistake.  I had seen a trailer for Beautiful Boy and thought that this was the book that the movie was based on.  It is not.  There is a movie for this book (using the same title) that I cannot seem to figure out when it will be released.  But I digress…

We Need to Talk About Kevin is one of the most disturbing books I have ever read.  You begin with the unsettling impression that the mother (whose letters to her estranged husband make up the story) is one sick unit. And even though you know the ending from the very start (Keven kills a number of students in a Columbine-like school massacre) you will still find yourself doubting your initial impressions and being surprised a number of times.

I read with a Kindle and an iPhone, so I have gotten in the habit of looking up definitions of words I’m not sure of as I go.  while I like to think I have a good vocabulary, I am admitting that I looked up a lot of words.  Mr. Shriver writes very well and this particular work is fully entertaining.

The book  got as close to getting five stars as one can get without passing that mark.  Definitely worth a read.
